Tuesday History

The earliest-documented advertisement for a Tuesday taco special that was found ...dates back to 1933, while the first documented use of the words “Taco Tuesday” appeared in a newspaper advertisement for a drive-in restaurant in 1973.

According to The Strange History of Taco Tuesday, the promotional phrase was started in 1982 by a chain called Taco John's based out of Cheyenne, Wyoming. In fact, Taco John's placed a registered trademark on the phrase in 1989 to attach it to their brand.

Taco Day History

The holiday was first invented by Roberto L. Gomez, a San Antonio, Texas city councilor who put together a motorcade to send a 48-pound tamale to President Kennedy for his birthday in 1961 “on behalf of citizens of the United States of Latin heritage,” according to a press release.

It is believed that the origin of the taco started in Mexican silver mines, some time in the 19th century. This hypothesis about the taco comes from the fact that the first type of taco was “taco de minero,” which translates to mean miner's tacos.
